Thanks to everyone who looked out for Em after her fall tonight.  Sleeping but restless, and will have two lumpy bruises and a coupla scratches to remind her of the night for the next few days.

According to Em she overran the wheel of the rider in front on the submarine side and couldn't slow down enough or take evasive action on the tarmac.  Perhaps I need to learn her how to take evasive action on the grass.

Merry Xmas to all.  Have fun and ride well.

This may seem like a strange question?, but I'll ask it anyway:
There seems to have been an extraordinarily large number of (club racing) crashes of late
- does anyone have some inking as to what is going wrong (because it seems something is Huh)

We have had an extraordinarily high number of falls this season. In the case where something could have been done to prevent incident action has been taken.

Not sure that I know you Grant but it is a very good question.  I haven't ridden (and hence fallen) at track yet  but I have fallen both on a training ride and at Beaumont Rd crits an have done much thinking about this.

Frankly, relative to other pastimes (surfclubs being a good example) you are simply thrown into the deep end with cycling with minimal training.  I have found that while A,B and to a degree C grade have fairly even levels of competitors and a tighter "spread" of abilities and experience, "D" grade can be fairly frightening in its mixture of age, ablities, fitness and experience.  I'm happy to put my hand-up as an, ahem, "less fit" master with the best of my athletic prowress (such as it was) behind me but still with strong competitive juices.  Throw us in with youngsters who are either too timid or too scared or too over-confident and you have a recipie for disaster.

With more and more of us taking up this beautiful sport I think Cycling Australia will have to take this up seriously and maybe introduce some form of compulsory training for beginners (like the bronze medallion) and failing that our club needs to have rostered training officers to ride with the D Grade Peleton when road starts again.  A couple of A Graders did this voluntarily during the regional race last year and it was great.

Oh and Beaumont Road's turns are just bloody dangerous - they're too tight to mix nimble 12 year olds on small bikes with two metre behemoths on endurance frames like me -its like trying to turn the Titanic on those haiprins and its why I fell - working too hard to get back.

Just a thought.

i think its just coincidence that they are happening all the time. But looking at the numbers  in the Crits and Track seems to be more then i have known ever. the more we have the more likely there are going to be stacks

I'm fairly certain track numbers are down a little, with the drop off mainly being perhaps the more experienced riders, I guess due to work/family etc.

Good news is there are lots of new riders keen to race track!

I am one of the people in the newbie category. Any sort of standardized training would be nice, but so far I have found the wise words of the experienced club riders is incredibly helpful. As risky as it is, hands on learning while on the bike seems to be the most effective method.

I guess the most important thing to do for newbies is tell them to hang off the back and watch for a while until they build confidence.  I have been told that in both road and track. It's pretty solid advice and works in almost all scenarios.

Been lots of talk regarding the higher than usual number of prangs lately. Here's my 2 cents worth - I can speak for the track as I have been there and witnessed pretty much all of them this season. Of the four notable ones we had three pulled pedal/cleats (wear and tear gone too far??) and one black out (not much you can do about that!). The others could be down to inexperience as quoted by others. Perhaps finding some time to do a bit of track practice/training would help instead of hoping for the best on comp night. I have been getting down to Adcock Velodrome most Mondays around 5pm. A good little group of some seniors and juniors have been getting there and we have been doing some training. Anybody is welcome to join us if they want some fixed gear time! Grin
