Turned up for the coffee ride this morning and Mike Tilley was just dissapearing off into the distance a few minutes early.
In the absence of a number of riders encouraging a social ride where coffee is king, i threw Patonga into the mix for fun.

So, result = another hill climb time trial to add to the list.
Between the base of the hill at Patonga (intersection of the road opposite the cricket oval) and up to the 80kph sign just over the topmost crest of the climb.

9.30 for moi, I am sure I can knock a minute off this one by the end of the season.  Grin

Variation to be strongly encouraged = time trial including climbs and descents both sides (ocean beach to patonga roundabout and back)   Tongue

Would be a great variation for the coffee ride one week, it only adds about 40 minutes onto the loop.

I don't think we should encourage a TT for descents, for this reason.

Sounds like a good spot for uphill TT times, definitely a climber's climb, not a power climb like Kariong.

No wonder you posted it here.

Did I pass you (going the other way) at Sth Kincumber this morning Stu? I had my Liquigas jersey on.  Whoever it was, sorry I didn't give much of a wave - I gave the SHITS a cheery wave at Terrigal and just got a blank stare back from about 15 of them. It was only after you (if it was you) had gone past that I realised it was a CCCC rider.  I did parry my little finger in your general direction 'though.

Anyhoo - I'm all for a different course.  I really don't like riding in a fast bunch in traffic.  Prefer my Bensville-McMasters-Avoca-Terrigal-Kincumber-Bensville loop (50k).  Less traffic and better for hill training!

Patonga is one of the best climbs around the coast.

The climb towards Patonga is ~4% but varies in pitch making it a nice little challenge for those not accustomed to tackling the hills.  My personal opinion of the descent into Patonga is that it is expert/extreme level of difficulty and should be used by club members as a recovery from the climb riding at a slow pace (<30kph) for safety.

The climb out of Patonga is ~5% but doesn't vary in pitch all that much, making it a great climb to pick a gear and simply gronk out the watts.  The descent on the other side is rough but spectacular.  Thoroughly recommended for anyone wanting to improve their skills on a decent descent.  It's not technical but is fast, long and bumpy.

As for downhill TT records: meh.

Yes that was me.
I lost track of the number of riders I saw yesterday, I would have seen at least 30 cyclists out on road bikes on the loop.
Great to se for the sport.
