Before the Road season fades away into the mists of time, I wanted to thank my fellow D Graders for what was an extremely enjoyable year. The spirit was excellent amongst the riders but races were keenly contested, with lots of attacks both sneaky and bold, gut-busting sprints and plenty of riders prepared to put the hard yakka in with long pulls on the front. Multiple winners and placegetters speak of a year of great contest, but it was all done safely with riders watching out for each other. There were plenty of highlights for me that I will long remember: Young Nick who at the start of the year was timidly hanging three lengths off the back, gaining in confidence, becoming a dominant player and going up to C grade. Lord knows how he would have gone if his big levers could have turned over another 5 gears. Kylie's smile after getting up Blood the first time intact - always a big moment in any CCCC rider's
palmares
. Bill doing most of the work in front on a hot windy day and
still
winning the sprint. Plenty of D Graders going up to C and mixing it with the best. Being part of Mark Lynch's first win - and the look of shock on the C Grader's faces when we caught them in the same race. Priceless.
But the best highlight for me was in an ordinary race when we turned halfway at Calga, about 20 of us still in tact, paceline working perfectly, urging each other on. It was beautiful to watch.
Thank you all and thanks to Damon, Whitey and Daryl (and all the volunteers) for making it a very enjoyable Road season.
