Two CC riders (Nick Yallouris and Michael Smith) make the wheel-race final

The Feature race for the week 3 of RAW Track 2011 was the IMGing HD Video Sunglasses 1.5km Wheel-Race. Sixteen riders from four different grades lined up for the handicap event with the eventual winner set to take home a pair of the amazing video glasses.

From as early as the completion of the first lap, it quickly became apparent that this event would be won by riders in either Div 1 or Div 4. The middle markers of Div 2 and 3 had made a great start with the div 2 riders closing in very quickly to form a solid chase group of eight riders, despite this they were only making slender gains on the lead of the div 4 riders.  At the back, Div 1 nailed a perfect start and formed a four man train determined to deliver one of their riders to the win.

By the completion of the first km Div 4 rider Rylee Field had launched his bid for the win whilst almost simultaneously Jackson Law began to round the middle markers with fellow div 1 riders David Stevens and Nick Yallouris, unable to hold his wheel. The scene was now set for a two man pursuit, with Rylee entering the bell lap maintaining a 60m advantage. Rylee showed great speed endurance and determination to hold out the U19 national champion until the dying stages of the race. Jackson powered around Rylee in the final straight to take yet another brilliant win.

Jackson is in later stages of his preparation for the Moscow Junior World Championships and was very happy to take possession of the Imging HD Video Sunglasses. He has promised to utilise them on his trip to Russia recording footage of his life changing expierience.

The Wheel-race was filmed from both the grand stands and from inside the race, with current 2 x World Masters Champion and World record holder David Stevens donning the video glasses to film not only the race, but also the lead up to the event. You can check out his experience at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4DMeYJxi1A&NR=1  whilst you can compared the in-race excitement with the grandstand view at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkqJDsPlEXs&NR=1

Many people have asked me where they can get themselves a set of these video glasses and if you are interested check out the website www.imging.com.au

News and Information

 2011
For Week 4
July 08 2011

Week 4 Bring it!

RAW TRACK Newsletter 2011 sponsored by:

www.Bicisport.com.au

This week’s Races

•   Round 1   Warm up Scratch
•   Round 2   “No – Race this week” Every second week is a feature race.
•   Round 3  Kierins
•   Round 4  Winners Race

•   Round 5 Combines + CNSW Time Blaster” (Time Blaster time is 8:48 sec for $100)

Explain these races
Kierin- The keirin is a motorpaced event that is very popular in Japan where it originated. In that country, huge amounts of money are bet on races and professional keirin riders command impressive salaries. It is similar to the match sprint, but features 6-8 riders on the track. A derny motorbike paces the riders from 25 km/h up to 45 km/h for the first few laps. During this time, riders jostle each other for the best position and this is often the roughest part of the event. With two and a half laps to go, the derny bike pulls off and the sprint is on. Team tactics are important here, as the leadout is often quite long. If one team can get two of their riders in the final, then they are at a distinct advantage. reference www.cyclingnews.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CxkGOgoAOM&feature=channel

Winners Race- The race is over 16 laps. There is a sprint with 13laps to-go, the winner of this sprint qualifies for the final sprint, however he/she must continue to race, keeping a close eye on the winners of the sprints with 10, 7 and 4 Laps to go. Each of these riders also qualify for the final sprint. With 4 laps to go all non-qualifying riders must withdraw from the race, leaving a 4 up sprint to decide the final placing. You can work out all the tactics on this one.

•   Round 5  Round 5  Combines

Explain these races
Point'a'Lap- The race is run similar to a point score-however each lap is a sprint for first place only and worth one point. The overall winner is the rider with the most points.

Sprint- at RAW Track, sprints are usually run as 4-6 ups over 2-3 laps the first laps are usually spent sizing your opponents up and positioning yourself for the optimum explosion to the finish. It is not uncommon for a sneaky rider to attack early in the hope of holding a lead to the finish. The sprint is a test of power, speed and above all, tactics.

Timothy McMillan and Jackson Law going to the Junior World Championship Moscow 17-21 August

•   Two RAW track prodigies are heading to Moscow to represent our country
•   Many of you will not be aware that a Junior level the costs involved in this fall upon the athlete (read Parents)

•   Tim will be riding a 200m fly this Friday!

Nick watch

Nick had another great night last night, but had his wings trimmed (not clipped) by the presence of Australian Omnium Champion and UCI World Cup rider Scott Law.
Scott was easily the stand out rider and had a separate agenda in aiding a couple of mates (namely Jack Edwards and Gavin White) which cost Nick at least two higher placings. Despite this Nick showed unbelievable speed in an attempt to contain the National Champion and came second in the final race of the night. He was the only rider able to raise his speed on the final lap to chase Scott Law and crossed the line with a time of 8:36sec 52.5km/hr

•   Great riding by Stuart Hughes last night has moved the CCCC rider into the lead of Div 3.
•   Chris Murphy showed astonishing speed just not always at the best time in Div 2.
•   Damon Marshall continues to be a strong rider in Div 4 and seems to be learning allot about racing at the DGV. A close 2nd in the endurance race was a good reward for his improved tactics.

This week’s Races

Round 2  The Aqto / Bernard Beer 1.5km Wheel –Race
Round 3  1 Lap screamer
Round 4  Madi- Leads + Div 1 Madison
Round 5  Round 5  Combines

Explain these races

1 lap Screamers- Riders draw lots to start in position 1-4 up the track. The riders start in a Time trial hold (No-Push) for whistle start. First one back wins. Easy

Madison- A high speed, two person continuous race relay.  Think of tag team wrestling meets track cycling - while one partner is racing the other is resting at the top of the track. This race is named after Madison Square Garden in New York where the event was first held. Two man teams contest the event. which is typically an endurance event. Only one rider from each team is allowed in the race at a given time, meaning that teams must take it in turn each lap (or more) to have a rider in the race. Changeovers are quite dangerous, but impressive to watch when done well - one rider circles around waiting for his teammate, who joins hands and imparts his momentum to the slower rider. At FNWTR we usually ride this on a scratch race format reference www.cyclingnews.com

Madilead- The pace in this race is set by a Madison team (see Madison). The bunch follows the Madison team for ??laps until, with 5 laps remaining the Madison leaders take off leaving the bunch to sought out the winner in scratch race style finish. The Idea of this race is to allow the lower grades to experience following a Madison change (which is a key skill in learning to ride a Madison). The pace of this race can often change with the experienced leaders putting in a few hard attacks to

News and Information

 2011
For Week 8
5th Aug 2011

Week 8 Bring it!

RAW TRACK Newsletter 2011 sponsored by:

www.Bicisport.com.au

This week’s Races
•   Round 1   warm up Scratch
•   Round 2  no race this week
•   Round 3  Div 1 – 4 Italian Pursuit  (Div 5= ½ field sprint)
•   Round 4    Group Handicaps
•   Round 5  Round 5  Combines  + “CNSW Time Blaster”

Explain these races

Italian Pursuit- this team event combines riders of all standards to form two teams at opposite sides of the track. Team captains organise their team so as the slowest riders are at the front of the train.  After the end of each lap, the leading rider pulls off completely, leaving the next to fight the wind. Therefore, the first rider has to do one lap, the second, two laps, and the last rider completes as many laps as in his team. Hence, the last rider typically has the best endurance. The pace of this race is continuously building and lead often changes hands between the opposing teams, until the final two riders are left to decide the race. If the handicapper does a good job this can be without a doubt one of the most exciting races as the excitement builds with the pace.

Group Handicap- This is a scratch race over 10 -15 laps however your starting position will be allocated by the race organiser. You will either start on the front straight or the back straight dependent on my belief of your ability (and maybe other factors). The race will be started with a whistle and the riders on the back straight will need to catch the lead riders in order to secure a place.

Video’s to watch
•   Example Italian Pursuit :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyNGKZewm2c
•   Example Italian Pursuit from 2nd last wheel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZt4GawuJV8

Italian Pursuit Procedure
•   The Italian pursuits will be for div 4 to div 1
•   The teams will be allocated at the sign on desk.
•   As you sign on you will be allocated a team name (you can not choose your team)
•   Make sure you know your team # name when signing on.
•   In the event of uneven riders the 2nd lead rider of the smaller team will do two laps
•   The team captain will be the rider highest on point-score
•   It will be a fence start on the whistle
•   The lead rider will do two laps, all other riders will do one lap.
•   Members of the wining team receive 3 points
•   Don’t forget to cheer on your team after you have finished your turn.

Italian Team# - Name - Captains
•   Team 1 =    Evans    = Gavin White
•   Team 2 =    Anddy Schleck        = Tirian McManus
•   Team 3 =    Frank Schlech      = David Stevens
•   Team 4 =    Voeckler     =     Nick Yallouris

The no catch rule.
•   At RAW track we have a no catch rule in Italian Pursuits.
•   That is that; no team is to close within 50m of the opposing team.
•   Instead the lead rider should maintain a tempo equal to that of the other team @ a 50m gap
•   This rule is void when we get to 4 riders per team remaining at this point a catch is allowed.

•   How does this work?
•   As you sign on you will be allocated and assigned one of six team colours.
•   Your team colour will be attached to your left sleeve.
•   Teams will be Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Orange and Purple
•   Every round will score 5 , 3 , 2 and 1 point towards your team score.
•   The point scouring rounds will be 1 -4 (that’s every round)
•   Round 5 will be an Italian Pursuit using your colour team
•   Team Points will determine the Ride Off order (1 v 2 for 1st , 3 v 4 for 3rd etc)
•   The Italian Pursuit will determine the final results.

What is the reward?
•   Members of the teams individually will receive a bonus 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1 point respectively towards the TWE series point-score.
•   This year riders will not earn individual points for placing in races.

Why are we doing this?
•   Because it is a heap of fun.
•   It is a great opportunity to socialise with people you normally wouldn’t
•   A Div 1 rider will intently watch how his Div 5 team mate is going and may offer a tip or two

Team’s night procedure
•   Please ensure that when you sign on you receive a colour strip and a safety pin
•   Record your colour on sign on sheet
•   Please pin your colour to your left sleave

Team’s night seating

•   This year I will set up 6 flagged areas. One for each team colour.
•   It is encouraged that riders from each team sit in designated area.
•   Although it is not compulsory to sit in this area, it is encouraged.

What if there is a draw on points
•   Should two teams be equal on points after round 4 and potentially be in different ride off’s (e.g. 2nd and 3rd tied)
•   In RAW Track style, Scissor Paper Rock between team captains will determine the higher position.

This week’s Races
•   Round 1   warm up Scratch
•   Round 2  no wheel-race this week.
•   Round 3  Kierins
•   Round 4   Motor Pace
•   Round 5  Round 5  Team colour Super Italian Pursuit.

Explain these races
Kierin- The kierin is a motor-paced event that is very popular in Japan where it originated. In that country, huge amounts of money are bet on races and professional kierin riders command impressive salaries.

Motorpace-   A derny motorbike paces the riders from the start at 45 km/h for the first few laps. The Derny rider will up the pace to a steady 48km/h. During this time, riders will rotate positions compleating a max of one lap behind the derny. With about four laps to go, the derny bike pulls off and a standard scratch race starts. This event is intended to be a endurance race, with the pace of the derny ensuring fatigue has set in by the time it swings off.
