I'm a bit like Wayne66, in that I haven't done this type of thing before, but am quite keen... I cycle around on the roads around the lakes, but it gets a bit boring by myself at times, and am always looking to challenge myself...

Can anyone turn up and pay the $33 as a "trial" type of thing? I've not done any cycle racing before, so as such don't have experience in racing ettiquette etc. and wouldn't want to tread on anyones toes etc... Will anyone be available to point out what a newbie should / shouldn't do??

I try to ride around Centennial Park in Sydney once / week before work, and I've gotten involved in some of the bunch rides down there (almost always unintentionally) and don't really know what to do etc, and theres always people shouting / jostling etc and I wouldn't want to do the wrong thing in a race type scenario and really pee someone off...

Also, is this a thing that people do every week? I play another sport on most Friday nights, but theres always heaps of wash outs, byes etc, so I would be an infrequent "racer"

Thanks,

Timmmmm

If  you are riding in D grade don't jostle etc with the female rider who is almost old enough for a seniors card,
Every year I have done the crits, I have been desperately trying to keep up with the peloton which tends to get further and
further away.....until I get lapped and try to hang on again (you are allowed to get back on when your own grade passes you).

You are sure to do better than this.
Give it a go.

Timmmmmmmmmmmm,

Yep, anyone can turn up and pay for a day licence and race. I (Mick Curran) will be riding with D grade for the first part of their crit on Friday night just to offer some pointers and assistance.  I'll also do a lap with you pre-race and let you know what to expect.

See you there.

I can't wait Timmmm. Let's do it !

I actually rode 2 or 3 criteriums in C grade with Manly Warringah in about 1993. That would be the same as D grade (I think) because it was the lowest grade and all competitors were adults.

I was much, much fitter and I weighed 66kgs. I now weigh 80kgs, but that's down from 98kgs at the start of this year.

I remember that two thirds of the field did not finish. I was able to finish no problem in those days, but that is what I fear on Friday night. I don't have the fitness that I once had and I haven't ridden in a group for 17 or 18 years.

I don't want a DNF and I don't want to cause an accident.

But I have to give it a go, to see if I can compete at 45.

I really dread dropping out.

Don't worry about it Wayne.  If you get dropped, you get dropped.  Take note of the point in the race that you got dropped at, and try to beat that in your next race.

Come along and have fun.  I think Crafty (Our Club's track co-ordinator) puts it best,

See you there Timmmm.

BTW, I checked out Lucca Rd this afternoon as I was driving through. It's nice and flat  Grin

A bit rough, though, in parts.

Lucca Rd is nice and flat
...except for the little uphill bit into the howling noreastrly breeze.  Doesn't normally bother you on the first lap...

But on the final couple of laps when you're on the rivet & just hanging on...

Scott, you are obviously new to the game. We do not speak like this.  Grin

The race is very rarely cancelled due to overcast conditions but rather cancelled due to riders thinking they are made of sugar, therefore, not turning up and the race does not go ahead due to lack of numbers.

In short, turn up and be ready for anything.

See you there.

P.s. I have heard big wraps on a C grade win for you so it would be in your best interest to race.

To save time at the sign on desk tomorrow and to spare Whitey (the handicapper) from hearing the same excuses........
I have compiled a list. Please note the corresponding number to your excuse and quote it when pleading to start in a grade lower than you should be.  Wink

1. Change of job, no time to train.
2. New baby, no time to train.
3. Sick all winter.
4. Knee troubles.
5. Spending more time with the family.
6. All of the above.

See you there.
