I know there's a few of us out there having suffered through this & probably done the same amount of research as I have.

I was told by the surgeon this morning that 85% of clavicle fractures are allowed to heal sans surgery. Unfortunately mine would have been a long & painful road without surgery as it was fractured in 5 places & was significantly displaced.

My recovery has been phenomenal (have dispensed with the Panadeine Forte although the fractured ribs are still uncomfortable) considering I had surgery 6 days ago & have had a 10cm screw inserted, but I have been told in no uncertain terms to slow down & allow the bone to knit (along the red lines on the x-ray). So indoor training commences next week, with road riding to commence in 4 to 5 weeks. Not a bad outcome.

I have attached post & pre op x-rays by way of comparison.

They say that if you are going to break anything as a cyclist, this is the one to do. All I can say is that it hurt like hell pre op but settled down quickly.  Don't know how Cadel managed 3 clavicle fractures in one year.

See you on the bike soon & stay upright.

Col..

Hi Colin

Looks like a good clavicle again now. Impressive repair and hardware!
Keep positive and take it easy until fully repaired. Wont take long.

It makes you think how well professional racers come back from similar issues, both mentally and physically. Recent examples are Bradley Wiggins or Dani Predosa.
