After yesterday, it seems that I need a new helmet – a ROAD bike one without a visor.. After looking around at what others are wearing, and having a quick look online, I see that there are many brands / types etc with a large range in prices from low to very high…
So now I have two questions:
1). Are there some features / brands that I should look out for (or avoid)?
2). Can anyone recommend a bike shop with a decent range of helmets, and who will be able to help me pick a correctly fitting one? I’d prefer to buy things like a helmet from a store, rather than online if possible.

Thanks,

Timmmmm

Agree with both you and Greggy....

You cant be winning your division with that helmet on!  AND You are better off going into Dan's.  If you buy on line you may be getting the identical but "Non Australian Standard" helmet without a sticker....

See you at Crits. Grin

AS2063 sticker is a must have
White is cool, all other colour schemes are scorn magnets
Visor is not cool unless you ride BMX, then full face + pointless visor is the schnizzle
According to Murphs he won't talk to riders who place their sunglass arms under their helmet straps.  We are no longer on speaking terms.

A correctly fitting helmet will sit comfortably ~halfway down your forehead and as a rule of thumb will not fall off your head if you tilt it forward with the straps undone.

The straps should join about 1cm under the ears and should not move from that position.  I mean the the strap joint, not your ears.

The clip should not take chunks of skin out of your waddle every time you do your helmet up.  Leave a finger width of room to avoid the "silent scream" and subsequent "crying like a baby" episodes.  Definitely not cool on a bunch ride.

See a good bike store for assistance in the matters. The better ones will offer to destroy your existing helmet for you.

Thanks guys.
Struth Jock, you've got some strict criteria there...
I'm a little stuck in getting to Wyoming before Friday night, so it looks like I'm sticking with the current helmet til the weekend comes round, but I've just "removed" the visor, hopefully that will be acceptable in the style stakes Grin I'll give it a test run in Centennial park tomorrow morning - there's some real style masters to compare myself to down there...
I'm starting to sense some rivalry between road and mtb riders... Could this be true??? It's similar to the rivalry between shortboarders and longboarders in the surf Cool I've just got to work out who's the "coolest", so I know where I fit in...

Thanks again,

Sarcasm Alert

Rocks and trees don't move, cars do. Imagine riding a trail where the obstacles can move in a seemingly random fashion. That's how extreme road cycling is.

And that's why we're better.  Wink

Dear No 53, i think there are an awfull lot of mountain bikers that could come to the crits and rip your legs off, i don't know if you'd be able to do the same on their terain. I'd like to think we are all cyclists and support each other in where ever our interest lies, with on disipline not being any better than another. Grin Grin

Moving obstacles??? I once nearly hit a kangaroo whilst mountain biking off Bruce Cres. In Warnervale... Does that count as extreme? Not to mention the young uns on their trail bikes

Yes Ciaran, I have to say that was fairly obvious.   Roll Eyes

Agreed, I didn't make it too obvious in the first post.  Ah well.

Edit - fixed it now.  Hope this clears up all confusion over the post.  Grin

I did one mountain bike race and a lost more blood than I lost in 25 years of rugby. And then some. Never again, I swear.  I'd rather take my chances with roundabouts.
