A number of CCCC riders are potentially in the hunt for the sub-series at RAW track (Hillbrick Series)

They have a shot at a Hillbrick Carbon Pista Frame.

7 points makes the top 15 at this stage!

•   Peter Holley  8pts
•   Ross Clague 6 pts
•   Andrew Mills 5 pts
•   Mick Curren 4 pts
•   Dan Cleary 3pts
•   Michael Mellish 3pts
•   Michael Smith 1 pt

With two remaining rounds I think a number of CCCC riders can have a shot (especially like Andrew Mills chances)
Top 15 get to ride off in H'cap for Frame (essentially)

RAW Track Week 8

Numbers were again down this week, thanks to the NSW Titles for juniors, and the Tamworth Two day tour for the seniors. This week’s racing was structured around a team competition, as you signed in you were allocated a ribbon to pin to your jersey representing your team. There were six teams on the night, with the biggest representation of Coasties in the Blue team (4 of us). It was great to see Scott Tweedie make the trip down and pick up points for the club.
Due to work commitments, what a surprise aye, I missed the warm up, and arrived in time to sneak in half a dozen laps prior to the nights racing commencing.

 Scratch Races....
Simon, Scott, and myself were the Div 4 starters from the Coast. The scratch race took on extra importance this week, with your result counting toward your team’s points total. Simon and Scott missed out, with Scott reporting he was happy we talked him out of doing Div 5, and going straight into Div 4. After a few weeks of this track stuff, I am finally starting to learn a little more about positioning, and picked up the win for the blue team. Div 2 Dan decided Div 3 was really the place for him, joining Kraussie who had moved himself up a division.  Dan rolled out looking great in one of his new shop jerseys which quickly caught the eye of the internationally renowned commentator, Crafty. Going through the rider’s names he finally got to Dan and in classic Crafty said… “and Dan the Bike Man in the gayest jersey I have ever seen!” In true Crafty style he then went on to give Dan’s shops a rap. So if you are looking for a special jersey to catch everyone’s attention, drop into Pushy Galore, and ask for one of the gayest jerseys ever seen! Dan proceeded to ride from the back of the bunch, confident in his ability to mow them all down. If only the split didn’t happen in the middle of the bunch, I’m sure Dan would have won. He didn’t! No points for Team Blue.  Kraussie showed how to do it properly and straight up from Div 4, picked up the win and the points for Team Blue.. We were off to a good start. Millsy rolled out in Div 2, looking as strong as ever, and again showed how to ride at the front, and took the win. It was by no means an easy win for him though, coming off the final bend onto the straight, they were 3 wide, with Millsy on the outside. Showing his track knowledge, in his words…. “If you do the hard work, and stay even through the bend, you will just roll over the line!”   Grin Millsy is looking awesome, every time he hits the track, he looks like he will win.

Kierins....
With the big fields, Div 4 had four heats. Scott picked up his first scoring points, taking a fine 3rd in his heat. I was determined to follow the school of ‘Chris Hoy’ and find the derny’s wheel, then hold them off for the 2.5 laps when he pulled off. Part one went well, I got the wheel, now to hold them off.  Undecided As Sean Eadie (how good is it you get to follow a world champion around) pulled off, I rolled through lifting the pace. I was doing my best to hold my position, and 2.5 laps seemed way too long. I held them off though, and picked up the points for Team Blue. Kraussie was showing fine form in Div 3, and picked up 2nd in his heat for more points for Team Blue. Pete Holley was doing it the hard way in his Div 3 heat, trying to go right the way around the outside, and finding himself around 4th place. Millsy again was strong, taking another win in his heat, only to be relegated to last for coming down into the sprinters lane.  :'(

Miss’n’Outs…
With the big fields, and time a worry, Crafty has devious ways of ‘thinning’ the fields. The Derny rolled out with orders to wind it up and crack the field over 6 laps, those remaining would then contest a standard miss’n’out. Scott, Hugs and myself rolled out in the same heat. I had the wheel, and was to find out Scott wasn’t far off my wheel, with Hugs in amongst the rest. The derny did its job, and the field was decimated when he pulled off. I kept the pace up, expecting the usual rush past you have in a miss’n’out as I hit the line. No one came past! I kept going, and again, no one came past. Another lap, still no one, so I decided to have a look behind, all I could see was orange, Scott on my wheel. I backed it off a little at this stage, knowing we were not going to be eliminated, until the bell. We got the bell, and Scott moved onto my hip, I jumped out of the saddle and held him to take the win. A 1-2 for the Coasties, with Hugs in 4th. Div 3 and the boys rolled out, with Pete Holley hanging at the back, waaaay off the back…. Until the derny came through, then he jumped on the wheel, rode around the bunch, and was instantly in the prime position.  Shocked Who said Pete wasn’t smart?  Wink The pace lifted, and lifted, and lifted, until Pete was the only one on the bike with a gap of about 25mts. For those of us in the infield, we wondered if Crafty would give the race to Pete and make the bunch race for second. Crafty called them “all in”, so Pete was in front of a bunch of 10 or so chasing him. He led around for one more lap, then slowly slid out the back. Div 2 Dan… What a rider! Not content to be riding in the gayest jersey ever, Dan proceeded to show the crowd how to do a ‘stoppie on a trackie’. What a moment of excitement for us all as coming of the bank and sprinting for 3rd or 4th, Dan misjudged and almost lost his front wheel. With a smile, Dan rolled across the line, content with 4th and not kissing the boards. The rules changed for Div 2, with a point’a’lap miss’n’out, followed by a kierin. As riders were eliminated from the miss’n’out, they went to the rear and sat on the derny to await an all in keirin. Points were gained for staying in the miss’n’out, then more points for the place getters in the kierin. Millsy again rode strongly, taking the win and the bonus point, putting him in the prime spot for the overall. Millsy was kindly let in by a rider following the derny in about mid-field. With tired legs, he again had to try and come over the top, and just couldn’t make it, picking up 4th place. With the points calculated, Millsy had won the overall!

Italians…
The race off for the points was governed by your teams overall points position.  Huggsy’s Team Purple got to ride off for 5th and 6th, and they were promptly told the bad news they would all have to do multiple laps, ½ of their team had packed up and headed out. Needless to say, they struggled, no points! 3rd & 4th Featured Scott in Team Red, and to my disgust, I haven’t put the results in my sheet, after all the focus was on Team Blue picking up the points.  Grin Blue was loaded with 4 Coasties. The ride off for 1st & 2nd was Blue v Green, Millsy in Team Green! Blue started well, way out in front! 1st rider peeled off, the 2nd, 3rd, my turn. I increased the pace, trying to build as I neared the line to peel off remembering Crafty’s instructions from Adcock… “Give your next rider a lead out… Don’t slow… Accelerate across the line!” I peeled off, went around the banking, and heard my team yelling “don’t sit up…. Stay in!” One of our riders had blown, and our race was done. Our only hope was for one of the Greens to pull the pin…. It didn’t happen! Millsy picked up the big points, and if not for his relegation, would have ‘cleaned up’.

Well done to Scott Tweedy, I’m sure he had a ball, and will be back. Tegan rode well in Div 5 up against some strong riders. Brianna started the night well for the Coast, and the teams she represented, including Blue, with a win in her JD race….
Thanks for another great nights racing Crafty!

Get Paul to hook you up with a buddy for your first few laps.  You've got plenty of track experience at Adcock, so you only need to get used to the banking plus entering and leaving the track.  The banking angle is more or less the same at the top of the track as it is riding on the black line, so if you can ride on the black line you can ride anywhere.  There's not as much grip as Adcock Park, so keep you speed over 30kmh on the boards and you'll be fine.

No.  That would be bad.  If you stay at 30kmh many people will pass you and you will lose.  The shame will be unbearable. The drive home will be one of silent contemplation.  That would also be unbearable, especially if you have passengers.

Well done to Pete Smits and Jock who turned up for their first RAW night of the year.

Because it was their first night they both scored CCCC 30 start points each therefore along with the other starters me, rosko, hugs, smithy, rich, millsy and krausie CCCC scored 130 points towards the club challenge before the night had even started.

It was the best night ever for the CCCC with first and second places all night.
Keep your eyes open for the report from rosko and do yourself a favour and read it cause CCCC carved up!

Stumpy, citizen and other RAW virgins please come down and get those all important 30 start points, while your there you might as well jump in div 4 or 5 and win all night like pete did. once again well done pete!

RAW Track Week 9

As Mick said, great results for the Coasties this week. With Jock and Smitsy showing up for their first night of RAW Track this season, the points were pouring in. I’m sure this won’t be the last we see of Pete and Jock, with both having excellent nights.

Scratch Races....
To kick the night off, Pete rolled out in Div 5. Crafty has changed the format of the divisions, with Div 5 now gaining points for their racing. The idea of the ‘new’ division is to bring down the size of Div 4… Good luck with that!
Pete used the scratch race to find his legs, getting caught in the bunch, then riding the long way round to place second. Pete was looking good for the rest of the night, showing impressive pace right away. I know I keep saying it, positioning is so important at DGV! If you aren’t at the front, and have to go around someone, it really is a long way, just a tip for the newbies when they turn up.
Div 4 saw Hugs and myself front the starter, and this week, I was actually out to use this as a warm up for the TWE Wheel Race to come. I rolled it around for the first few laps, then went to the front to get the heart, lungs and legs going, lifting the pace, then putting in an ‘attack’. Feeling reasonably good, I swung up and waited for the bunch to come through, and watched from the back. Huggsy put in a little of an attack and took second.
Div 3 saw Kraussie out there, with Smithy, Rich and Jock in Div 2. Millsy, after dominating Div 2, stepped up with the big hitters in Div 1 tonight for the Scratch Race.

TWE Wheel Race
The ‘BIG’ race of the night, and I got to start off 215mts, not too far behind Div 1. I really wanted to win this race, as I know the quality of the prize up for 1st place, I’m sure everyone wanted this race!. Greg Ryan of TWE builds awesome wheels, as can be backed up by members of CCCC. I know Cupcake, Smitsy and Stumpy all have wheels built by Greg, and all are happy with them, and now I had the chance to get my own. The plan was for me to sit in with two of the other Div 4 guys, and stay away from the rest. EASY!  Undecided
Hugs gave me an awesome start, and for any of the Coasties in a wheelrace, get Hugs to start you. Two weeks ago, he gave Gadget a start, and learnt all he had to from one go…. Awesome Hugs! By the first bend I had passed all the Div 4 guys and put in a great first lap. I swung up and went to drop in behind my ‘friends’, and to my astonishment, they were nowhere. Precious seconds, think of Gadget a few weeks back, went by, and I waited, dropping in behind when they came through. Half laps from then I was back on the front. Again I swung up, this time having a look as I went, only to find I was pulling away. I decided to try and have a go, knowing I had wasted valuable time. A slight hope was thrown to me as I heard Crafty say the Div 1 guys were playing up high, then Bang! The ‘scratch’ marker, 14yr old Tirian McManus came flying past and I knew it was all over. Gavin White took the win, and the much wanted TWE Wheels.
Thanks to Greg of TWE for putting such a great prize up!

To the points rounds, and what a night!

Sprints....
Div 5, and Pete again learnt something about positioning and riding fast at DGV placing a close 3rd, picking up our first points for the night.
Hugs and I rolled out in the same heat, with me fresh from the TWE Wheel Race. The six lap race passed quickly, with me lifting the pace, until Simon attacked around the outside. I made myself as large as possible, and when I was passed, I sat in until around ½ lap to go, then went around, taking a 1-2 for the ‘good guys’.  Grin
Richard and Smithy rolled out for their heat, working well together during the race. With Richard on the front, Smithy attacked from 200 out, holding the chasers off all the way. Richard didn’t back it off, though naturally was passed as the chasers tried to get on Smithy’s wheel. Coming onto the straight, Richard was way up the banking, coming in for 4th place, though with the relegation of a rider in front, bumped up to third.. More points for the Coast. Jock! Jock rolled out for his heat, 6 laps. Staying near the front, and on the front, Jock showed the importance of positioning. With the bell ringing, Jock led them out, with Crafty expecting tiring legs to be run down. Jock stretched the field, and no one looked like stealing his win. More points… They just kept coming.  Cheesy
Div 1 put on a ‘Flying Team Sprint’, just as was occurring in Beijing, except over there, they were using a standing start. Crafty was interested to see just how close the ‘flying’ times would come to the Olympic times. The best time on the night, just happened to include a Coastie in Tosser, with second place including Millsy. This was really turning into an Orange night. The pace these guys hit the line at the start was amazing! Flying through the line, then peeling off after 1 lap the best time was ‘ONLY’ around 46sec. The Olympic guys were doing this from a standing start in 43sec!  Shocked

Winner’s Race…
For the winner’s race, you have to win a certain sprint to qualify for the final sprint, so a field of 20, finishes in a final sprint of only 4 riders. Starting at 15 laps, qualifying sprints are held with 12, 9, 6, and then 3 laps to go, with the ‘winners’ contesting for the win.
Smitsy in Div 5, had a slightly different race, and riding smart, learning fast, and positioning well, took his first win at RAW Track.
Simon and I again rode out together. I figured the key to this one was positioning, what a surprise. Everything happens so fast here! I found myself in a position to take the first sprint, then sat in waiting for the finish. By the time 3 laps remained, there were only two of us able to contest the finish, having lapped the other qulaifiers, and I was able to take the win.
Div 2, and the race of the night! Four Coasties took to the line, with hopes of a grand finish for the night. The race started poorly for the Coast, with Illawarra putting 4 on the front, and looking likely to take all four spots for the final. They got it wrong! Just as Illawarra were looking good, second wheel swing ups started, and suddenly the race was back on. Millsy took the second spot, riding around the outside, as usual. Millsy is just so strong, he has more fun going around everyone! Smithy jumped away to take spot number 3, and just as he was going onto the straight, a slower rider being lapped, slid from the top of the track to the bottom. The ensuing crash, which luckily, for those not involved, only included two riders, one with a repair bill, though healthy. The race was neutralised while the riders were tendered to, and resumed with 1 qualifier to come. An Illawarra rider took the final spot, setting up a great team finish. Coming onto the banking prior to the to the bell lap, four orange jerseys slowly sized each other up on the top, the bright orange of Millsy and Smithy at the front. The Coasties jumped almost simultaneously, with all of us cheering them on. Millsy took it out, with Mick riding ‘shotgun’ across the line. In the words of Crafty’s commentary, “a collective roar goes up from the Central Coast, a collective sigh from Illawarra”… Well done guys!
Div 1 and Tosser was up against it. Team riding really came to the fore tonight, not just in Div 4 and Div 2, Div 1 was full of ‘Team Roadrunner’, and boy, were they fast! Tosser found an ally in Brock Rogers from North Sydney, and they did all they could to grab some points and prestige off the ‘Roadrunners’. Up against it, they did a great job, and I’m sure we will see more from these guys in the future as they forge an alliance to help each other.

Combines and Time Blaster…
Huggsie rolled out for the combine of Div 5, 4 and 3 and finished up in the places. A whole bunch of us rolled out for the ‘non-time blaster’. Millsy still in dominant form, took the win.
The time blaster went off, with ‘Team Roadrunner’ taking the cash. Brock put in a great effort, coming in 3rd after being shown the ‘long way around’ from the back straight.

Did I mention Kraussie was here?  Lips sealed

Thanks for another great nights racing Crafty and a big thanks to Greg of TWE for the prize put up for the TWE Wheel Race…

Here are a couple of thoughts of a " Newbie " to FNWTR. Having only ever seen DGV on tele the first thing that i noticed was the shortness of the track ( compared to Addcock Park ) and the way that the sides of the track seem to rise up like the side of a mountain!. I arrived reasonably early, had a quick chat to Simon and Kraussie about what to expect and then headed out for a few tentative warm up laps. Lets be honest, the track has a very steep banking, even at the lower black line you wonder how the hell your tyres are going to maintain traction. But as everyone suggested if you keep your speed up you can just roll around swith very little drama, even ventured above the blue line without any drama. Div 5 racing for the newbies was a good introduction to the track, especially after Jock recommended that I would probably go better without the " death grip " on the handlebars. Everyone is really supportive and I would reccommend it to others who may have been thinking about giving it a go. I will certainly give it another go, especially with a bigger gear, the 86 did seem a little small at times.
