I came around a rider being gapped as the breakaway headed up the road when I learnt the hard way that witches caps are stronger than carbon forks at 55km/h! Had to buy a new fork - but luckily my face broke my fall or it could have really hurt!

Believe it or not, I used to be quite brutal on cycling equipment in my younger days despite only weighing 69kg (current weight 96kg). There is virtually nothing on a bike I have not snapped or disintegrated. Between the years of 88-93 this is my list of destruction. None of the below are from crashes, unless stated.
From Front to Back;
•   Front Rim eyelets pulled out
•   Umpteen front spokes
•   Campag-record front hub spoke eyelet pulled out ......descending Bumble
•   Front Forks separated around crown ..........Criterium in Netherlands
•   Break lever snapped .........crash
•   Profile bars snapped ...........St George 2 Day tour
•   Handle bars Snapped ......... Belgium Kermese
•   Old school gear leaver snapped .......Training
•   Steel Frame (vitus) snapped ...........Grafton - Inverell
•   Steel Frame (Chesini) snapped .........Parramatta open
•   Steel Frame (Falc) snapped ..........Climbing Henry Parry Drive
•   Repaired Steel Frame (Falc) snapped .......... Calga club race
•   Front Derailleur Disintegrated .........Calga club race (Peats Ridge school)
•   Front Derailleur cable snapped ........Training
•   Drive side Crank Snapped ............Hill effort New Lambton Rd Newcastle
•   Look pedal bearings destruction ...............Manning Valley 2 day tour
•   Seat post snapped ...........night training in Newcastle
•   Saddle rails snapped ........Track race Adcock Park
•   Chain snapped ...........Criterium Kariong Mt Panang
•   Rear Derailleur disintegration ...........crossing bridge in Canberra 2 Day tour (milk race)
•   Collapsed Suspension disc .......NSW state TT championships
•   Umpteen + more rear spokes
For each of the above items I have an accompanying story. Bear in mind, that during that period of my life I was training 20-30 hrs going to uni and working a part time job, so I had no money for new equipment, hence everything I owned was second hand. To give you an example the Vitus died on its 20th birthday and I was its fourth owner.

In the past twelve months in the 100 or so km’s I have ridden i have...

Stripped a track hub + axel...
Stripped a crank...
Cracked a full carbon pair of look forks (still getting over that one)...
Destroyed three singles...
One continental gp4000 with entire sidewall blown apart... still finished and won the race,,, lol...
Bent chain rings... still trying to work that one out...
2 broken gear cables
Chorus bottom bracket cup...
and hung up the paconi due to safety concerns...

Past eight years of cycling

Stripped 2 cranks...
Countless spokes broken...
3 chains... there is probably still one sitting on the inside lane of the wyong rd roundabout at Tuggerah...
Broken bars... (not fun..!)
Catastrophic stem bolt failure... stainless steel bolt into cheep alloy...
Two seat bolts...
Endless cleats
One steel frame
Home trainer fan... it exploded and pieces were found on the front lawn... thing was i was using it in the back yard...
Lost a jockey wheel...
Endless cleats...
One ford laser and its drug dealer driver...
3 velocity razor rims...
5 American classic rear hubs...
One ultegra derailleur...
2 Broken axels...
Stripped track hub...

thats about all i can think of for the moment...

Some impressive hardware failures there, and it brings back more happy memories to add to my earlier post.

Eyelets! They never once let me down, but now that you mention it I have pulled a spoke through a non-eyeleted rim! And yes, it was a Velocity.

Look cleats! Crack, there goes another one... usually at traffic lights

Derailleur cables! Hmmm, my rear derailleur is sluggish, what if I give it a big shove? <snap> Oooops.

Teeth! My own front teeth, sadly, in a fall but also the rear cogs - now all of those teeth were there before the ride... I think.

I'd better stop now before I question my own sanity. I have hit 2 cars and a bus, none of 'em my fault - does that count? But I can't beat Paul's list no matter what I do.

haha crafty you are a funny one... Maybe you kept breaking parts due to the fact they were second hand, and how old was that frame 20? lol

I wonder how many of these broken parts that everyone talks about are due to incorrect assembly or faulty parts? And how many are from just being one tough rider

I've hit 3 cars, and had two trucks and a bus hit me, though unbelievably, I have not sustained injuries of note in any of them.. Written off two bikes though..  Grin

My heart 'brake':

After being hit and dazed by a guy driving a ute, he scraped me up and drove me home because I was able to say where I lived, despite my concussion.  My heart was the thing that broke, (the next day) when I realised that the police and ambulance should have been called and that I had allowed a hit and run to get away with it - even though I'd actually been in his car!  I was sore for months and scared for a year.  It took away my confidence.  What a 'clever' man he was, he could say he 'helped' me.  Still, I eventually got back on.  On a new bike!
