I folks I need some help. I have decided to upgrade the groupo on my bike and have a question. Given I am running 8 speed chorus with an old fashion bottom bracket. Can I just pull this out and one of the new external type in or is it not worth it.

Thanks

Campy, good choice !!   Arew you replacing the whole group?  Replace it with the new Campy 11 speed.  The new style integrated cranks will fit your frame, it's just a different way to set it up.  Are you worried about q-factor?

Yes Rosko 8 speed and you can't say you haven't heard of it beacuse we all know how old you are now.

I think I know what you are saying.  Basically, 8 spd Campy cranks will only accept the original spindle type BB they come with.  Only the newer Ultra-Torque style cranks use the integrated spindle / outboard bearing design.

Thanks climbo the plan is to buy a whole groupo.  I just needed to know if once I take the old groupo off the new BB just goes onto the same thread without any further requirments.

yep, what are you buying?  you can get both It or Eng threaded cups to fit your frame, most likely you will have English.

In theory it should work ok, but having said I had a few/many problems when I put ten speed chorus on my last bike... my last frame was probably designed more for a nine speed shimano set up so I had issues getting the front derailleur in the right spot and functioning, and the clearance at the drop outs was a bit of an issue as well, the chain would tend to rub on the frame at times. Your probably best to speak to one of the three campagnolo wholesalers in the country, one of the tech guys at bike sports should be able to give you a well educated guess...

Yes Mick it is very sad..
I have owned a bike with 10sp, and I don't mean at the back...  :'( How did we ever ride with so few gears? Looking at history.. No slower than today apparently!

all frames have 130mm spacing on the rear dropouts, you can't change much about that, I'm surprised it rubbed anywhere Eddy, I've never had that on any frame with 10 spd Campy.  If it does rub, something must be set up wrong or was the frame not straight?

The chain rubbing on the frame was probably because the bottom sprocket on a ten speed campag cassette sits out slightly further.  There was a good millimetre or so gap between the chain and the frame, but i think the majority of rubbing occurred because the frame was flexing... i.e. too much power  Wink

When i first built the bike up a guy from hadley's told me that i should expect the chain to rub. Apparently it is reletively common with campag...

I am not an expert but I have read that 8 speed campy freehubs have a different spline setup to nine/ten speed. They are not interchangeable apparently. You would have to change the freehub too and I don't know if a ten speed freehub fits on older hubs.

Weren't older frames a 126mm width,needed stretching a little ... Wink

Cycling sports at tempe is the campy distributor for NSW etc.

Eddy surely wouldn't know about 126mm spacing...

True about 8 v 9/10 Chicken, apparently you can get it done but the parts to do so are hard to find.  Just wait for 11 speed and upgrade everything at once Smiley
