A Palm Beach ride is on again this Sunday.

We will leave West Gosford shops at 6.15am sharp - to easily make the 10.30am ferry to Ettalong after a coffee stop somewhere.

For anyone that hasn't done this ride it is quite tough - there are lots of hills and it's about 120kms. This is not the best ride if it's a first attempt at this distance, especially with the added pressure of making the ferry.

As usual, the bunch will wait at the top of each climb and we well arrive together as a bunch to the ferry - even if it means giving a push to get up the final climb or two.

Remember to pack plenty of food/snacks for this ride to keep energy levels up. There are numerous places to stop for water bottle refills.

Finally - the usual coffee ride from WGS at 7am will still be happening for anyone that doesn't want to join the ride to Palmy.

G'day,

My names Daniel and I've just moved to Toowoon Bay from Melbourne.

Are there any training rides in that area about 5.30 am during the week to get some riding in before work?

Where is WGS?

Welcome to the Coast Daniel.
Check out the CCCC website for weekday morning training rides- there is usually a group going around the lake on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
WGS is West Gosford Shops, the usual meeting place is in the car park near the main entrance.

We had a fantastic ride until a few k's from the ferry when Ben hit a decent sized rock with his front wheel while charging for the ferry.

Ben was on the left side of a paceline (luckily) and almost regained control but once he veered into the gravel it was all over red rover. The front wheel washed out and he hit the deck in the gravel which probably limited the damage as he slid to a stop on his leg, elbow and hand.

A little dazed when I got to him - his first question was "is my bike all right?"

After a bit of straightening out by the boys and a quick wash of the wounds he soldiered on to the ferry with a disgusted look on his face and a well deserved push up the final climb from Jock.

The bike damage was minimal but I reckon Ben had the worst shower of his life when he finally got home to wash the dirt out of his wounds.

Hope the skin heals quickly mate.

Awesome day for a ride, and an excellent bunch to ride with.  Everyone stayed pretty much together on every climb so the punctures that TC and I got didn't put a dent in our ambitions to reach the 10:30am ferry.  Even Ben's spectacular off wasn't enough to challenge us.

Ride of the day: Dr Rob Beckwith who started the ride 20mins behind us and still managed to make the ferry on time.

Other ride of the day: Phil who went above and beyond the call of duty to stay in touch with the group on every climb.  Finally cracked on the run into Church Point, but there's no shame in that.

Other other ride of the day: the ferry.  We made it!

My first Palmy ride: what's with warming down at LT?!??   Roll Eyes

What were the riding stats?  Sounds like a great training ride, Id like to have a go at the next one, but Im not sure if I could handle the pace over the 120k.

vic,

its not the easiest ride and would advise a pie in the sky adventure with the bunch before taking on the ferry frenzy.

Todays stats were: 117km, Avg: 29km/h that is with 2 big climbs and a few other tough pinches.

By the time we do another PB Ferry Frenzy you should be right.

You missed a top day Hodgee  Cheesy

A few more details to add to the other reports

10 Riders started from W Gos 6.15 today ,give or take 5 mins while they waited for me  Wink

A light fog became very thick as we crossed the Mooney bridge on the Freeway  Shocked ...
Glad I was on the front as just as we all made it to the other side an empty B double screamed past us ....phew!!

We joined up with the old highway at the calga exit and rolled on down the road seeing absolutely heaps of other riders going the opposite way with a very large percentage of women riding ..once word gets out we run a womens crit race we might some sydney riders perhaps on a Sunday  Smiley

Jock got the first puncture not far past PITS but soon had it sorted . The ride from that point on was just bliss , great weather ,great company, seemingly very little traffic too.

On one of the last climbs before Palmy cupcake got the second puncture and four of us ,Pete T, Phil, Huggsy and myself went on ahead leaving the A graders to catch us by the ferry , unfortunately that was when Ben had his fall Undecided which was bad luck but we all made the ferry with 10 mins to spare. Rod caught up just as the ferry was getting ready to go.

Now to the ferry trip which was fabulous sitting in the sun enjoying the view except for the cranky captain who drew the short straw today I think  Roll Eyes

The ride back from Ettalong to W.Gos didn't even seem to hurt this time with a fast paceline working well nearly all the way.

Thanks guys for a fabulous day, one of the highlights of the Sunday Stumpys Rides. Grin

Good Luck , Ben .. hope you heal quick, Stumpy kindly reminded him at Ettalong that he could have a few days rest from his training program, That was nice of him  Roll Eyes  Grin

interesting comparing PITS to Bobbo.  HR stayed rock solid on the steady-state climb up PITS, but one hard surge on Bobbo knocks the stuffing out even though your HR shows you were almost asleep for the first part of it.  Wink
